After last year’s cancellation due to COVID-19, the Maryland Renaissance Festival (MDRF) will undergo a period of restoration by resuming its annual nine weekends of merriment in Crownsville, Maryland starting in August 2021.

Set in a fictional 16th Century English Tudor village called Revel Grove on grounds totaling 25 acres, the fair will feature an estimated 130 craft shops and 42 food booths. Among all the renaissance fairs held in the United States, MDRF is the second largest.

History

Founder Jules Smith organized and held the first MDRF in 1977 in Columbia, Maryland. Star performers Penn & Teller and The Flying Karamazov Brothers entertained at the inaugural event. In 1985, the fair transferred to its current location in Crownsville. It was put on as an Elizabethan fair until 1989, when the present Henry VIII theme was adopted.

Participants

In years past, the 1,300 participants who populated Revel Grove were made up of 400 fair employees, 700 vendor workers, and 200 performers who performed as stage entertainers or period village characters.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival entertains visitors with eight large theaters, four small stages inside taverns, a special children’s area, and a jousting tiltyard that seats 3,000 spectators. Animal rides are also available for a fee.

Revival of a Lost Era

Visitors will be transported into an era of knights, ladies-in-waiting, venison, and tankards of mead. Traveling minstrels will enchant you with music as you stroll the fairgrounds, a curious juxtaposition of the 16th and 21st Centuries. Fairgoers are encouraged to wear or rent renaissance costumes to heighten their sense of participation.

Jousting, sword swallowing, maypole dancing, and archery, and other forms of English entertainment during the time of King Henry VIII await them. The MDRF also worships Shakespeare, and his stage plays are performed every year. For those seeking mementoes, artisans will offer for sale handmade goods, including jewelry, art, and clothing.
