Architect Secundino Fernandez was the visionary behind the Maryland World War II Memorial that honors the state’s heroes who perished during the most terrible military conflict in history. Overlooking the Severn River by the U.S. Naval Academy, the monument was dedicated on July 23, 1998. Visiting this memorial gives you the opportunity to honor those from Maryland who sacrificed their lives for their nation during World War II.
Key Features of the Memorial
A rectangular amphitheater is encircled by 48 columns representing the American states at that time, along with slabs of granite commemorating the names of 6,454 service members from Maryland who perished in World War II.
The tallest structure of the memorial is an obelisk dominating the site. Seven-sided, it symbolizes Maryland being America’s seventh state. It is topped by a large star that lights up in the evening.
There are 20 plaques commemorating World War II milestones and turning points. Maryland’s military men and women, who numbered 288,000, along with those who toiled in wartime factories, are honored for their contributions.
Representing the world and each measuring fourteen feet in diameter, two globes are marked by the sites of key battles in the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.
Contributions by Marylanders
The Maryland National Guard 29th Infantry Division, which is nicknamed the “Blue and Gray”, served in Europe with distinction. Their trial by fire began in Normandy, France during the D-Day beach landings.
The schools of medicine of the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Hospital each organized two military hospitals. Serving in the Pacific Theater, their medical teams saved the lives of many American service members.
